This series is one of the best . Each book covers one ship in great detail. This one covers the vessel that started it all HMS Dreadnought. Sadly, if USS South Carolina or her sister had been faster out of the building yards, we might not call 20th century ships of the line Dreadnoughts. This book covers every detail there is about this amazing ship. I recommend this series as one of the best detail books out there.

A very unusal book that you don't expect to find

In a nutshell this book is detailed blueprints for the HMS Dreadnought. There is a small amount of text at the beginning, as well as unusually in depth statistical details such as how much the ship cost to be built as well.

The majority of the book after that first chapter are all schematics. You will see deck by deck plans for every toom in the ship, with many rooms even more detailed in their own chapters. Who would have guessed the ship's prison was in the same room as the toilets at the rear of the ship? Did you know that the ammunition bunkers have air conditioning to keep the gunpowder/cordite a consistant temperature for consistant gunnery? Did you know that the boiler rooms have air forced into them in the steam age equivalent of turbo charging?

Where the book does fall flat however is explaining all these details. You had better already have a good idea of what the components of a battleship are, because the schematics do not explain what it is you are looking at.

I still give it a 5 out of 5 because you will not find this level of detail in any other book.

Detailed Description- Limited analysis

The book can be broken into three parts, the first is relatively brief and gives the background to how the ship came about, its costs, major issues etc.

There then follows an extensive collection of photograhs showing the ship during it's construction.

The remainder of the book (probably about 60% of it) consists of plans and construction drawings of the ship. These provide a wealth of detail on all aspects of the ship ranging from construction of the ships boilers to the attachment arrangement of steel girders.

If you want to see how an early dreadnought is put together you'll love this book. However it doesn't give the designers reasoning for the decisions made (or the issues they had to resolve). Therefore if you want to know what was built it's a good chioce; if you want to know why they built it the way they did you'll need to look elsewhere (Battleship Design & Development 1905-1945 by Friedman gives a much more detailed assessment of the conflicting engineering issues facing any battleship designer).

About the Author
Robert G. Gallager is a Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the world's leading information theorists. He is a Fellow of the US National Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Sciences, and his numerous awards and honours include the IEEE Medal of Honour (1990) and the Marconi Prize (2003). He was awarded the MIT Graduate Student Teaching Award in 1993, and this book is based on his 20 years of experience of teaching this subject to students.

Excellent Textbook

Stochastic Processes: Theory for Applications is very well written and does an excellent job of bridging the gap between intuition and mathematical rigorousness at the first-year graduate engineering school level. The book is a combination of the material from two MIT courses: (6.262) Discrete Stochastic Process and (6.432) Stochastic Processes, Detection, and Estimation. Because of this, the book shares much in common with Prof. Gallager's previous textbook: Discrete Stochastic Processes (ISBN-13: 978-0792395836 published 1995). I would not recommend to those interested only in this sub-topic - and who already own DSP - to purchase this new textbook as not much new will be gained. Nevertheless, the new inductee into the stochastic process world will be well served by this excellent update.

The best intro to stochastic processes available, bar none [and I have seen a lot of them] - also a companion to his GREAT, FREE course on the MIT Open Course website. If you buy this book, plan to do the course - if you don't you are missing out on a massive amount of information.

Purchased and read in the Doms of Dark Haven 2: Western Night Anthology.

I loved this standalone story for the anthology. In fact, I ended up wishing this had been a part of a series or a little longer.

Shelby wasn’t a bratty sub, she was just not that experienced. But she was a very fast learner. The story moved quickly for they had only one week together. Shelby not only blossomed under him and became the perfect submissive, but they also fell for one another.

Trevor realized that he’d been missing a challenge of having a sweet submissive who needed his guidance and discipline, and Shelby realized she needed and wanted more than the boring occasional sessions with her friend. The scenes were all scorching hot, but underneath was also this sweet romance. I was rooting for them to work out a way to be together. Their last scene in Dark Haven made me tear up, but the ending was oh so sexy! Definitely a winner for me.

Shelby is a part time sub; she only dabbles and comes to see her friend/Dom a few times a year. This year there is a western themed poker tournament at the BDSM club and when the game gets tight and down to two men the steaks are raised. What is at stake? A week with Dom Trevor, man, what a way to spend a week off! Trevor is fascinated with Shelby and knows he can pack as much training into the week as he can to make her a good sub. Holy crap do they have a great week. I was actually off for a week when I read this and my week was by far the most boring week ever compared to her week! LOL. While things weren’t as hot and as descriptive as I normally like it still worked for me and I really enjoyed this book. If you like BDSM books without a lot of angst or drama this is the book for you.

Fun, fantastic, romantic read

Trevor is an indomitable Dom. In a poker game, he won Shelby as a submissive for a week. She's a bit of a brat but wanted training and that's exactly what she got. Actually maybe she got more than what she bargained on. They both did -- including their HEA. This is a steaming hot, sexy BDSM ride you'll love to read.
