Fair to Middling

This is a generally well written book, easy to read (though I think the author overuses the word "ensure(d)" by a considerable margin). On the other hand, there is not a single map in the book. This may be little or no problem for a WWII afficianado, who likely has the requisite maps in his or her head, but could cause major annoyances for others, who will need a good atlas at the ready. Though primarily a military history as claimed, this is not the type of military history that focuses on the individual soldier. In fact, few military formations below the level of army group (= Russian front) are named or their movements discussed. This is definitely broad sweep military history. But some relatively obscure actions are given more space than one might expect: for example the Madagascar campaign is given half a page. On the other hand, the much longer South Pacific campaigns are relegated to a couple of pages. Author's choice, I suppose. There is some discussion of the home fronts, particularly the submarine war against England, and the bombing campaign against Germany. Munich and the lead-up to the war are covered in fair detail. All in all, an interesting read, though not the best book for the novice.

Siddhartha's life takes him on a journey toward enlightenment. Afire with youthful idealism, the Brahmin joins a group of ascetics, fasting and living without possessions. Meeting Gotama the Buddha, he comes to feel this is not the right path, though he also declines joining the Buddha's followers. He reenters the world, hoping to learn of his own nature, but instead slips gradually into hedonism and materialism. Surfeited and disgusted, he flees from his possessions to become a ferryman's apprentice, learning what lessons he can from the river itself. Herman Hesse's 1922 Bildungsroman parallels the life of Buddha and seems to argue that lessons of this sort cannot be taught but come from one's own struggle to find truth. Noted actor Derek Jacobi interprets this material wonderfully, and the package, despite abridging a Nobel prize winner's prose, can be highly recommended.AJohn Hiett, Iowa City P.L.

Beautiful novella, but this edition is unreadable due to many, many typos

By all means, buy the book, it's incredible, but don't buy this one. Hesse's words and W.K. Marriott's classic translation are butchered in this Simon & Brown printing -- "if" for "of", "nit" for "not", "heard" instead of "head" -- all in one paragraph. Yeesh.

Great book but don't buy this edition!

Siddhartha is a great book. This edition, however, is perhaps the worst edition of any book that I have ever--ever--seen published. The number of typos, grammatical mistakes, syntax errors, and other errors is astounding. The publishing house, Simon & Brown, should be embarrassed and ashamed.

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse changed my life and it will change yours too.

This book is a classic. In high school, I was told of this book by Andrew McMahon, of whom I was big fan of from his days in the band Something Corporate. He has a tattoo on his arm that says 'The River is Everywhere.' When describing the tattoo, he says it's a quote from Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. After reading the book, I realized that that phrase itself isn't in the book but the meaning is. To this day, that quote still strikes me deeply.

It wasn't an immediate change after I read Siddhartha but in the few years that followed, I slowly began to pick up shamatha meditation. Through the process of learning how to meditate, I picked up the Dhammapada. Through the different translations, I discovered Jack Kerouac and his version of Siddhartha, titled 'Wake up!'. Through the Jack Kerouac and the beat generation, I discovered eastern philosophy, a heart for travel, an interest in yoga, vegetarianism and ultimately veganism, The Road, and all sorts of different kinds of music. Through the changes of interest, I discovered a monastery of Theravada Buddhists within 15 miles of home that a dear friend built by hand with another monk. Eventually, I even met the Dalai Lama and many of the Tibetan monks that followed him. To this day, I meditate daily. I've found new friends, made new connections, and have a newfound respect for all people and the Earth itself. Siddhartha by Herman Hesse planted the seed. This book changed my life and it will change yours too

I have read a large range of reviews for this book, some hating it others loving it for both reasonable and utterly ridiculous reasons. If you are a TCM or OM student of any kind and plan on taking the NCCAOM test, whether you like the book or not, you WILL be studying this book. I must admit, I did find some of the grammatical errors to be a bit annoying and the State propaganda (it IS printed by a State run publisher) in Chapter 1 is almost laughable in it's fawning praise for Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution. All that aside, I am studying it along with other Authors such as Peter Deadman, "Acupuncture: A comprehensive text" translated by Bensky and O'Connor, and Giovanni Maciocia's works and I have already had a few "a-ha" moments while reading Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion (or 'CAM' as we call it in school). It is nice to have access to how it is still being taught in Beijing and it is rather different perspective on TCM and OM from the 'Western'/English speaking authors and translations.

Don't spend more than $10-15 for this book!!

Although required at many acupuncture/TCM schools, this is quite possibly the most badly translated & produced (certainly the most poorly edited) English language text book in Chinese medicine. Get a copy from a library. Photocopy pages from an older student. But please, please, please don't make the mistake I made buying a spanking new copy of "CAM" my first month of acupuncture school!

Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion is an excellent resource!

The text traces the history of acupuncture from ancient times and gives a thorough, yet easy to understand, account. Also, the information is invaluable throughout the book! There are detailed diagrams showing the meridians and acupoints, collaterals, as well as such detail as the Foot-Shaoyin or Hand Shaoyang. The General Principles of Treatment are discussed as well as the Principles for Prescription. It is easy to read yet well written and thorough and well worth the cost. This is a book you will want to keep as a resource and reference.

Another great tale, expertly spun

This series is an excellent example of quality YA writing that isn't sappy, predictable or inane. All of the character's have depth as their positive traits are nicely balanced by faults either real or perceived.

In this story the action was well paced, the character development continued at a believable pace as Mary struggles to adapt to having a boyfriend. She makes great strides as a person and with her power, while the reader is given numerous opportunities to see who she is beneath her anti-social persona.

All in all an excellent but easy read for those times when you want something slightly twisted but not to dark or deep.

Poor Mary can't seem to catch a break. what should've been an easy task has turned her life upside down yet again. faced with a mean old ghost who is not only mean dead but is blood thirsty to boot.
Mary thinks she will have to face this new ghost on her own but unexpected and a new found family members have entered too. Mary has to find not only herself and her gifts but how to control them and save the day. great read and is a real page turner!!!! a must have and a must read!!!!

I would encourage S.A Hunter into writing more books like this one this is a good book of a girl who has paranormal powers and could hear ghost and who has lots of difficulty interaction with other people her age and call her a freak. But that does not stop Mary on going on adventures with gran and her boyfriend Kyle and even thinking that a thirteen year old cousin she never knew about comes out of no were and says has the same ability as her and then some persons who make shows of them trying to prove to people that ghost do exist and capture Jake so a ghost could help Ursula communicate with her boyfriend who died in an accident a year and a half ago but she needs to cut Jake to let the ghost in to possese the boy because he promised her that he would help her find the ghost of her boyfriend but he only wants the body to hurt people and torture more people like when he had slaves before he died and he wants to kill more people to like Mary said he wants to paint the wall with there blood

Purchased this book for a photo class I'm taking at our local Jr. College. The book is very informative. I highly recommend this book for the biginner photographer. It gives lots of information on basic camera operation and photo taking and developing.

A Good Introduction

This book was recommended for an introductory photography class that I am taking. I think it does a good job introducing certain aspects of photography. As some who has been taking pictures for years in digital, it was good to learn some of the fundamentals of Photography which help to explain some things which help you to understand some of the mechanics of Photography a bit better.

I would say this book is a stepping stone. It gets your feet wet in a bunch of aspects of photography (and a bit to much time on film and film processing if you are shooting digital) but this would be a good gateway book to a more extensive study of aspects of Photography.

I am particular fond of this book as a first step, followed by a few other books:

Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition)
Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in Photography (Updated Edition)
Beyond Portraiture: Creative People Photography

What the "short course" spends a few brief pages on, these other books explore in much greater detail.

This is a good quick overview for a beginner or someone who needs a quick refresher course in Photography.

About the Author
I have been writing plays since high school and acting since junior high. In 1988, my first play "Nicolas Brooks" had instant success by winning the Youth Division at the Spokane Civic Theatre Forum Festival in Washington State. The writing bug infected me and I decided to form my own little theatre group in 1989 called Tailors of the Imagination. At 17, I produced and directed an extended version of "Nicolas Brooks" called "Who Loves a Writer" as well as a retelling of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. In 1990, my play "A Man and His Plant" was produced at the Spokane Civic Theatre Forum Festival in the adult division. The play went on to win third place in a national contest and then was published by the Dramatic Publishing Company as a part of an anthology "Short Stuff for Mature Actors." In New Mexico, I started a theatre group called the Poco Loco Players which have successfully produced four seasons including several plays that I co-wrote with the other Poco Loco Players. I also started the successful website called freedrama.com which has provided free plays to schools and community groups around the world. My 2002 victory as a writer was being included in the Love Creek Production's play festival in New York City. My monologue "Pearls of Wisdom" is the true story of the struggles young women face growing up in rural Idaho. Another success was a 2004 midwest tour of my play "The Redneck" (renamed Operation Redneck) by the professional theatre group Retroact Productions. During this time, freedrama.com became very popular receiving thousands of visitors. My plays on freedrama.com (now freedrama.net) have been performed on every continent including Antarctica. I'm now involved in developing film projects as a writer and producer. In 2008, I started a new series about War Veterans. The series has been featured by Apple iTunes and YouTube. The most successful episode has been "Saving Lives in World War II" which won an Emmy Award in 2009 for best Advanced Media Historical Documentary (Rocky Mountain Region). In 2010, I won a Telly Award for my full length documentary about a wildlife park in Arizona. And in 2011, I won a second Emmy Award for my short documentary about an organization called Paws and Stripes that helps veterans with PTSD using service dogs.

Soon he lies dead at the bottom of a well, and how he got there is the crux of this novel. A number of narrators give testimony to what they know about the circumstances surrounding the murder. The stories accumulate and become more detailed as the novel progresses, giving the reader not only a nontraditional murder mystery but insight into the mores and customs of the time. In addition, this is both an examination of the way figurative art is viewed within Islam and a love story that demonstrates the tricky mechanics of marriage laws. Award-winning Turkish author Pamuk (The White Castle) creatively casts the novel with colorful characters (including such entities as a tree and a gold coin) and provides a palpable sense of atmosphere of the Ottoman Empire that history and literary fans will appreciate. A dead man, a dog, a murderer, a coin, two lovers, and a tree take turns narrating this tale, which is Pamuk's follow-up to the well-reviewed but little read The New Life (1997). Set in sixteenth-century Istanbul, the novel is equal parts mystery, love story, and a philosophical discussion on the nature of art and artistic vision. Two men have been killed: Elegant, a miniaturist engaged (with others) on a book project glorifying the life of the sultan, and Enishte, the man who hired the artists to do the book. During a trip to Venice, Enishte became particularly entranced with the new Italian painting, particularly its use of perspective and figurative art. He urged his employees to adapt the new art form in their illustrations of the grand book they are producing. Black, Enishte's nephew, wants to win the hand of Enishte's daughter, Shekure, which he can only do by solving the murders. This intellectual mystery will appeal to fans of Eco, Pears, and Perez-Reverte. Nancy Pearl

A Mystery of Characters

This novel is a masterwork murder mystery - it shouldn't be limited by inclusion in that genre, but a murder is the prime motivational factor. It's easy to see why Pamuk won the Nobel Prize - his skill is great. This novel is all about characters; each chapter is narrated by a different character, not all even human, nor sentient. Pure genius. It's also a very rich description of Ottoman Turkey - or one segment of it - and that causes the action to move slowly, purposefully slowly. So, it's not for quick beach read. Notably, the translation is excellent, happily because I don't read Turkish. Wish I could give 4.5 stars - it's better than 4, but translation and editing errors, and some slight heavy slowness, keep it from 5 in my opinion.

A BOOK OF RARE QUALITY

RED is not a quick read. It is a book that demands your full attention. However, that attention will be abundantly rewarded. Pamuk is an author of such great talent that I would rank him with Calvino and Borges. And, like those two great artists, Pamuk presents you with many puzzles, many visions, and vivid details of lives both real and imaginary.

Superficially, RED is a murder mystery--and a very fine one--but I doubt that any reader who has gotten beyond the first 15 pages would continue reading merely to solve the mystery. As you read, Pamuk provides you with a great variety of treats: a living picture of Istanbul in 1550, a window into the lives of the master miniaturists of the period, an exploration of the attitudes of Islam towards varying degrees of artistic realism, a finely-nuanced love quadrangle, etc. And, the narrator of each chapter is, fairly often, an object rather than a person. These non-human narrators fit seamlessly into the telling of the story: there is nothing self-conscious about them. My favorite narrator of this kind is a gold piece; you learn where it was minted, where it has traveled, what it might buy, what it feels about being counterfeit--and, of course, how it feels about its role in the larger narrative. This chapter is a tour de force, but then so are the chapters with more usual narrators.

I cannot imagine the research involved in the creation of such a novel, but Pamuk wears this erudition lightly. When I read this book, I felt as if I had been casually welcomed into listening to the conversation of not one, but several, story-tellers of great fascination.

Another plus: there is no complex vocabulary--merely complex ideas gracefully presented.

This book is very hard to put down, but it is rich in so many ways that it would be a shame to rush greedily through it. Better to savor every page. You will very seldom come across writing this good.

This is a fantastic book. In my opinion the author fully deserves his Nobel prize. I appreciate his innovative technique of alternatively allowing various characters to assume the role of the narrator in the same scene in consecutive chapters. It's like you get into the mind of each dinner guest in turn. Sometimes such narrator may even be inanimate objects such as a picture on the wall, or a gold coin in the pocket! Once you read the first chapter, which is only about 5 pages, I guarantee you'd be hooked for good. I'd give it 5 stars but for the distasteful, repeated and clearly unnecessary reference to sex with "beautiful boys". Sex with a minor, as in Lolita, as long as done in good and non-vulgar taste, in my opinion is acceptable, barely. I do not condone it, but accept it; viewing it as part of literature. In this book, it does not pass this acid test. A marvelous find and a great read except for the final point.
