Absolutely life-changing

I read this book nearly 20 years ago and remember sobbing after finishing it. I couldn't put my finger on it then, but now realize that I was sensing the depth to which it would effect me and my life. Out of a desire to "come back to" my old Self -- one I have sorely missed lately -- I recently decided to read this book again. (I needed a new copy so that I could make fresh highlights and notations.) I'm amazed to see from where SO many of my "leanings," beliefs, and core values had come. This book had clearly laid the foundation for most -- if not all -- of my long-held interest in/study of alternative medicine and energy healing -- tools I've relied upon and successfully used for nearly two decades. More than that, this book rooted my understanding of "the way things work" in the universe and blended with the teachings of my Christian upbringing to provide me with a rich and unique perspective on how to navigate life and it's challenges.
I'll tell you a secret (and non-believers may find this a fluke): Since re-starting this book two weeks ago, I've had many strange and wonderful synchronicities occur that have validated my re-discovering it. Re-reading it seems to be like hitting the "reset" button -- putting me back into the natural flow of life and returning me to the happier, more peaceful person I once was. I wish the same for you as you begin your own journey with Sogyal Rinpoche's masterpiece.

Amazing help during a loved one's death

I credit this book with so much - I've gained a different and more beautiful perspective on life and death than I ever thought possible. When my close friend was dying of cancer, I had a year to read this and prepare for what was going to happen, and it sounds crazy, but by the time his passing came, I was ready. I had such a healthy, beautiful mindset about it that I could truly celebrate his life instead of feeling grief-stricken. It was amazing. What a gift.

I have loaned it to others when going through the death & dying process with their loved ones, and while some have described it as "intense" (which I did not feel it to be personally), they have ended up purchasing their own copies and passing it to their friends and loved ones as well.

A few recommendations:

- this book would likely not be helpful for those who are in denial about the death of a loved one or still feeling as though if they just fight harder or get more medicine their loved one could be saved. This book addresses death as a fact of life that we all must accept and understand, and thus those who aren't quite there yet, or who feel that death is a 'failure' of some kind (medicine, willpower, etc.), or haven't accepted it as an inevitable conclusion probably won't be in the right mindset to be able to use its guidance.

- It helps to be an open-minded person who can see the connections between faiths and belief systems - I imagine it wouldn't be as helpful for someone who devoutly follows one specific non-Buddhist dogma and believes all others are 100% wrong, since this links multiple faiths/beliefs/spirituality together (beautifully!). It is ultimately based in Buddhism (albeit a Western interpretation), so anyone who would automatically reject it based on its eastern roots would probably not benefit from it.

If you don't fit into either of the two above categories, it's amazing. I have friends who have read it even when not facing the death of a loved one, just to gain a healthier perspective on life. It's a beautiful book that contains beautiful words, no matter what you're facing in life.

this is a wonderful book. it's one of those books that you can pick up anytime and open to any page and get a conscious and supportive message, whatever physical and emotional place you're in. i also purchased the Tibetan Book of the Dead at the same time, having skimmed that book years ago and wanting to get more deeply into it again. but Tibetan Book of the Dead didn't seem accessible to me, someone who has been very interested yet undisciplined in learning about Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism. the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is a good entry point for me because Sogyal Rinpoche gives a it broader context and explains how we can approach the subject of death as we do the changing of seasons and the way we and our environment are connected and transforming all of the time. it's an excellent book whether you're looking for theory, practical meditation approaches or exercises, or -- as i was, a sort of guide book the the guide of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. highly recommend reading this and passing it along!

Not bad for extra practice, but does not contain Real SAT questions or trustworthy score conversions.

I'm a Harvard graduate, SAT perfect scorer and professional SAT tutor with 18 years of experience. Disclaimer: way back when, I used to teach and tutor the SAT for the Princeton Review.

This book is OK for extra practice if you've run out of official practice SATs--the answer explanations are more detailed than others I have seen, and the questions are mostly realistic. However, it's important to realize that the tests in this book are not real SATs. The only book with real, updated SATs is the Official SAT Study Guide, of which I have written an exhaustive customer review (currently the first one on the top): Official SAT Study Guide (2016 Edition) (Official Study Guide for the New Sat) Thus, the "score conversions" provided are simply Princeton's best guess, and cannot be trusted because the SATs contained within are not authentic.

Here are my top recommendations for synthetic SAT practice tests:

1) Ivy Global: Ivy Global's New SAT Guide, 2nd Edition
2) Barron's: Barron's 6 Practice Tests for the NEW SAT, 2nd Edition

For more than two decades, Tedlock ( Teachings from the American Earth ), an anthropologist, and her husband made sporadic visits to their adopted family on the Zuni Indian Reservation of western New Mexico. Here she records legends, songs, ceremonies and folk medicine practices and vividly captures the daily life of this agrarian and matriarchal tribe. The focus zooms in on Hapiya and his wife Tola and their sons and daughters, as they try to maintain balance between the old way and the intrusions of technology and outside culture. Tedlock first visited the Zuni Reservation, located in western New Mexico, in the late 1960s. She and her husband, Dennis, both anthropologists, spent time there in the 1970s doing fieldwork and research. Tedlock's book is not an ethnography but rather a description of the process of participant observation and its rewards and pitfalls. She shares much information about the Zuni, but most of all this is the story of her personal journey from outsider to Zuni family member. The spirit and humor of the Zunis she knew are very appealing. Tedlock gets at the heart of Zuni life through her many experiences: a trip to a Zunis-only bar, participating in the Shalako ceremony, cooking with Zuni women. Highly recommended.

Like a family album of lovingly collected snapshots, anecdotes, and clan lore, this study by Tedlock (Anthropology/SUNY at Buffalo) offers an affectionate and informative portrait of a contemporary Native American people, the Zuni of New Mexico. On her first visit, in the early 1970's, Tedlock, traveling with her new anthropologist-husband, ``fell in love with the beauty of the high desert and the native peoples of the American Southwest.'' This love affair soon turned into a scholarly study of the Zuni she met there, particularly the family of the patriarch Hapiya and his wife, Tola. Over the years, becoming an accepted member of Hapiya's family, Tedlock learned--as she listened to stories, attended festivals, and helped prepare special foods--how vital many of the old traditions still were. She observed such rituals as the sprinkling of cornmeal on animals and birds that had been killed, so that their journey to the village of the dead would be speedy; the propitiating of spirits with offerings of ears of corn; the butchering of deer; and the making of pottery with traditional tools and dyes. Tedlock made a special study of Zuni music--which, she says, is evolving new traditions, ``dancing the modern world into place, giving it meaning, order, perhaps even a sacred existence.'' But as exciting as the cultural discoveries have been, Tedlock also notes how, increasingly, the Zuni are living in a world in which much of the beauty of the old ways is challenged by the danger of the new. One of Hapiya's sons, a Vietnam vet and recovering alcoholic, has committed suicide; another family member has developed diabetes; and the viability of the old crafts is threatened by increasing costs and unscrupulous middlemen. Tedlock's personal but never sentimental approach vividly conveys the vitality and continuing role of Zuni traditions in the Southwest. A Great Alternative Ethnography

I really enjoyed reading Tedlock's work. The writing reverses the notion of "participant observation" to the "observation of participation." Instead of a removed, monological account, we are offered a polyphony of voices, including the authors. In fact, the ethnography reads much like a novel; however, these are real people with real stories to tell. The text offers a rich and evocative account of the Zuni people and their experiences in the borderzone between the past and present. Tedlock's work and writing strategies were central to the writing of my own ethnographic account of a Southeastern Native American Tribe in search of a visible past--the Pee Dee of South Carolina (Title: Native Americans in the Carolina Borderlands: A Critical Ethnography, Carolinas Press, 2000). Tedlock's ethnography is a must read for those on the verge of engaging ethnography, no matter the methodological bent, and students and academics interested in Native American Studies, Cultural Studies, Cultural Anthropology, and alternative ethnography.

Beautiful, truthful writing

This is a beautifully written, honest, book about a young woman ethnographer coming of age. She first went to Zuni Pueblo as a young woman painter with her anthropologist husband and fell in love with the people and place. As a result she went on to get graduate degrees in Ethnomusicology and Anthropology herself and began working with the Maya in Guatemala. Since then she has written a book on women shamans worldwide: The Woman in the Shaman's Body. These books are worth the time to read.

Wonderful Ethnographic Writing

This book is an example of the new attention ethnographers are paying to writing. Not only is it wonderfully written but it is an honest account of Zuni lives today. Tedlock went to the pueblo with her husband Dennis Tedlock (author of the "Popol Vuh" and the "Rabinal Achi") as a painter and after a number of visits and encouragement from Zuni women she decided to become an ethnographer. During her graduate education she also did work in Guatemala, see her classic book "Time and the Highland Maya." There is now a new book about to appear "The Woman in the Shaman's Body: Reclaiming the Feminine in Religion and Medicine." I've seen the advanced copy and it is fabulous! All these books are must reads for young documentary writers and spiritually alive women and men today!

About the Author

Marcia Millon Cornett Robert A. and Julia E. Dorn Professor of Finance at Bentley University. She received her B.S. degree in economics from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and her M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in finance from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. Cornett has written and published several articles in the areas of bank performance, bank regulation, corporate finance, and investments. Articles authored by Dr. Cornett have appeared in such academic journals as the Journal of Finance; the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking; the Journal of Financial Economics; Financial Management; and the Journal of Banking and Finance. She was recently ranked the 124th most published out of more than 17,600 authors and the number five female author in finance literature over the last 50 years. Along with Anthony Saunders, Dr. Cornett has recently completed work on the ninth edition of Financial Institutions Management (McGraw-Hill Education) and the sixth edition of Financial Markets and Institutions (McGraw-Hill Education). Professor Cornett serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Financial Services Research, Review of Financial Economics, Financial Review, and Multinational Finance Journal. Dr. Cornett has served as a member of the board of directors, the executive committee, and the finance committee of the SIU Credit Union. Dr. Cornett has also taught at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, the University of Colorado, Boston College, and Southern Methodist University. She is a member of the Financial Management Association, the American Finance Association, and the Western Finance Association.

Anthony Saunders is the John M. Schiff Professor of Finance and the Chair of the Department of Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University.  Professor Saunders received his PhD from the London School of Economics and has taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses at NYU since 1978.  Throughout his academic career, his teaching and research have specialized in financial institutions and international banking.  He has served as a visiting professor all over the world, including INSEAD, the Stockholm School of Economics, and the University of Melbourne.  He is currently on the Executive Committee of the Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions, NYU.
His research has been published in all the major money and banking and finance journals and in several books.  In addition, he has authored or co-authored several professional books, the most recent of which is Credit Risk Measurement: New Approaches to Value at Risk and Other Paradigms, John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1999.
