Jardine Matheson & Co, founded in Canton on 1 July, 1832, has had a longer continuous existence than any other British, European or American business connected with the China trade. It is the only firm surviving from pre-Treaty days (before the Treaty of Nanking which opened China to foreign commerce in 1842) and it played a very important part in that process. The firm soon after moved to the newly ceded colony of Hong Kong, and ever since the firm has been associated with the island. 'Jardines is Hong Kong' someone once asserted to Lord Blake - an exaggeration, of course, but pardonable. And although Hong Kong has reverted to Chinese sovereignty, Jardine Matheson is likely to remain a major feature of the place and may well play a renewed role in mainland China far into the twenty-first century. Lord Blake traces the early beginnings of the firm, from William Jardine's first glimpse of Canton in 1802, through the rapid expansion and growth of the nineteenth century and into the next, leaving the story exactly half-way through the twentieth century, just as the Korean War breaks out. The early history of the firm has always been regarded as the most interesting part of the story. It, or its background, has been the subject of two fascinating historical novels: the late James Clavell's bestselling blockbuster Tia-pan (1966) and Timothy Mo's aclaimed An Insular Possession (1986). The real story is equally exciting in the hands of one of the most distinguished historians of the twentieth century.

Robert (Lord) Blake was Provost of the Queen's College Oxford 1968-87 and pro-Vice Chancellor, Oxford University 1971-87. For ten years he was editor of The Dictionary of National Biography and has written many books. He was created a life peer in 1971.

Brilliantly written history of The Princely Hong

Written by renowned historian Robert Blake, this commissioned history of Jardine Matheson presents a sweeping history of this primus inter pares among British hongs, whose 171-year existence helped revitalize an Empire, and irrevocably changed the face of Asia.
Jardine Matheson is a British company whose prodigious trading activities were responsible for helping maintain a delicate balance of trade for Great Britain during the nineteenth century. A unique tripartite trade arrangement, bullion for tea and tea for opium, emerged, and the story of how this came about is as interesting as the story of Jardines.
During the 1830s, Chinese tea was in great demand in Britain, which consumed about 30 million pounds per annum. Tariffs on tea imports contributed about three million pounds annually to the British treasury; therefore, tea commerce held great political and commercial significance. However, this happy state of affairs presented a conundrum. Because the Chinese would only accept specie metals, such as silver, in payment for what an observer called 'the deleterious produce of China', the ever-increasing importation of tea from China began to considerably--and negatively--affect Britain's trade balance with that kingdom. To the Chinese kingdom's detriment and regret, the traders learned through trial and error that Indian opium was the key to maintaining the lucrative tea trade with the Middle Kingdom.
Jardine Matheson did not devise this three-sided trade, but the firm was in the right place at the right time, and was thus poised to profit immeasurably from this sort of arbitrage. The China trade made Jardines immensely powerful--so powerful, in fact, that its lobbying efforts to exact an indemnity from the Chinese government, which tried to stop the opium trade, led to the First Opium War.
This book makes an enthralling addition to business historiography, and considerably illuminates the role of private firms in economic and colonial adventurism in the Far East during the nineteenth century. For further reading, I recommend "Merchants to Multinationals: British Trading Companies in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries" if one wants to delve more into how the great British trading companies adapted to a changing economic landscape.

About the Author
Micha Archer (www.artmicha.com) has illustrated The Wise Fool and Lola’s Fandango, and Daniel Finds a Poem is the first book she’s also written. Working in collage and oil, her use of color and pattern is influenced by the folk art, crafts, and architecture of the countries she has visited and lived in. She realized the importance of the book as a teaching tool after teaching kindergarten and raising two children. Micha divides her time between Costa Rica and western Massachusetts, where she lives in the house she and her husband built, surrounded by gardens and forest to roam in.

I LOVE this story -- that every one of us can become a poet by paying attention to the world around us. It has a subtle and powerful rhythm and each page is a beautiful experience. I'm certain that children will want to have it read to them again and again from a very early age.

I loved this book and wish the author were around to write another. Whether an amateur musician or professional, this book has some out-of-the box ideas for improving practice and technique no matter instrument you play. I recently applied one of the techniques to a piece I was struggling with (moving to a recording of the piece) and it cleared up the rythmic issues I was having. The piece is now one of my favorites. I originally purchased the Kindle version and now also have a paper version to keep on hand as a reference.

About the Author

John Varvatos is one of the world’s most renowned menswear designers. Born and raised in Detroit, John was exposed to rock & roll from an early age. The spirit, electricity, and edginess intrinsic in the personal style of iconic bands such as Led Zeppelin, the Who, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, and MC5, among others, influenced the evolution of his design sensibility and is a unifying force in every expression of his award-winning brand today. In fall 2008, John opened his Bowery NYC boutique in the space that formerly housed the seminal underground music club CBGB's. He pays homage to the spirit of the legendary club, which closed in 2006, with ongoing performances that have included the likes of Guns N' Roses, The Roots, Paul Weller, The Wallflowers, and more. Since 2009, John has hosted New York Nights, a monthly radio show that includes music by and interviews with various artists who have influenced his career in fashion on SIRIUS XM’s Spectrum channel. He lives in New York City. an observation, more than a critique, book is a great visual record

I like it. Great candid shots. I love Varvatos ' designs. My critique is not so much of this very cool book, but how the subject matter always gets treated. The period Varvatos covers is broad, but much of it is the 70's. Despite contemporary urban hipster romanticism for all things Punk and/or androgynous from that period, Progressive rock was vey popular at the time, like it or not. Pink Floyd was always sufficiently edgy to continue getting props today, and no one in the urban hipster (and now Fashion) worlds would ever want to actually admit that Queen was part of this genre. I can't quite picture very many representatives of the NY fashion world in the 1970s, shlepping to "unsophisticated" Long Island to actually see a Queen concert at the Nassau Coluseum. But posthumously, they have fallen in love with Freddie Mercury. Nearly four years before the Ramones donned motorcycle jackets, tee shirt, and jeans, Peter Gabriel (Genesis) wore the exact same thing for his stage persona ( a rebellious teen graffiti artist) in the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Members of YES were always glammed out as were Roxy Music. It was not just The New York Dolls, Brian Eno was as androgynous and brilliant as David Bowie, but barely regarded by those "subject defining" contemporary Urban Hipsters. I wont try to make a case for Jethro Tull. NY fashion and renaissance festival people will never make peace. At least recognize the genre regardless of bias. Punk Rocks push back of the day was against the perceived pretentiousness of English prog. Today's waxing Punk nostalgia seems blissfully unaware of the reverse irony.
