I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Disclaimer: I did not read Resilient Love #1

I absolutely fell in love with this story. It had angst, love, hope, sadness, true trials and tribulations and a renewed sense of community.

Kai is a reformed gang member who decided to put his strength, knowledge and brain to good use helping kids who were perhaps not given every opportunity - he wanted to save those kids who were heading down a dangerous path. And, while his job was trying and sometimes he was tired, he never stopped. Knowing he saved just one kid from a life of crime was enough for him. Kai's character is resilient, just like the title suggests. He had several mitigating factors early on in his life that led him to where he is today and while I'm sure we all wish that he would not have been dealt those curve balls, the fact that he was able to pull himself together, make something of himself and not look back is something great.

His best friend Loren was someone who was always by his side. I felt that Loren's character was so important, because without Loren in his life, Kai might not have made it as far as he did. He also would not have developed the relationships with other members of their community - the kids and teacher that would allow for such a wonderful story to come full circle. I liked how Loren was always there for Kai, right up until I didn't. I saw the co-dependency in their relationship and knew that it would only lead to things that were not so easily fixed. But, I also understand why they needed each other like they did. I also loved how despite Loren's unwillingness to come out of the closet did not deter Kai's friendship didn't waiver.

Then you have Jeremy. Oh man, I wept from the very beginning of this story. Brent's depression didn't diminish Jeremy's love in him at all. In fact, I thought Jeremy was so accommodating and loving that I was almost tempted to not finish the book when tragedy struck because I didn't know if I could handle the emotions that were running through my head.

This story is about loss, overcoming loss, allowing forgiveness and finding yourself enough to let someone else in. I was literally crying (The ugly kind of crying!) in my car as I listened to this story - hoping nobody looked over and wondered what was so wrong. There were so many emotions that Hansen was able to pull out of me.

This was my first Hansen book and I absolutely loved it. The only issue I had (and it might have been because I received an advance copy), but the formatting was very hard to decipher at times, who I was reading about. Also, and I'm sure this was because it was an advanced copy, but the interjected numbers, along with the title and author were incredibly distracting to listen to and read. It would be more helpful to not have those, because it makes the story much more choppy.

I cannot wait to read Loren's book!

Earl Babbie is eloquent in his writing style, and lends good clarity to specific topics. However, his obsession with religion, politics, and homosexuality tend to distract from the quality of the presentation. There is hardly a chapter where he hasn't inserted a pitch on his pet topics, and he even appears to spend much of Chapter 13 venting about the Bible and homosexuality. The text book seems partly a demonstration of his self-righteous social/intellectual "superiority". He could have offered a clean and simple conveyance of research methods, with benign examples and without the innuendo. Maybe in the next edition?

What's Edgar Wright doing next? Is it this? It should be this.

I want to hack the website so I can give this six stars. I've always been a fan of Scott Pilgrim, but this, THIS, has a maturity to its imagery and storytelling I was not expecting whatsoever. Seconds blew me away. I couldn't stop reading it -- once the hooks were in, it just absorbed me into it. The brilliance of it, at least to me, is just how imperfect it is. I don't mean that on an execution level, no, that's perfect; I mean that on a narrative level. I haven't been affected by a graphic novel like this since Blankets -- and if that isn't high enough praise to get you to buy it, I don't have any idea what could.

The best graphic novel I've read in years.

I loved almost everything about seconds except for a couple of cliches used to justify the ending which I didn't care for. The ending just felt kind of forced and unsatisfying, but I loved pretty much everything before it.
As for the characters, I thought Katie was a cool protagonist but she's kind of a clone of Bryan Lee O'Malley's previous leads, Max was boring and forgettable(I never got why Katie loved him , aside from good looks), Andrew had the potential to be a better character but Bryan Lee O'Malley never capitalizes and seems to loose interest in him by the end, Lis is cool and charming without even trying, and Hazel is pretty cool- but the book isn't long enough to provide proper development for her(this is the case for most of the secondary characters).

In the end, after a four year wait I expected more from the story and characters, but... Seconds is still a charming and stylish little tale with awesome artwork that's totally worth purchasing( I just couldn't get with the ending). I hope Bryan's next graphic novel shakes up the formula we've come to expect from him though.

A completely different book, but in a good way

Seconds is a fantastic adventure with a great mythos and fascinating artwork. I had no idea what to expect when I was first reading it, and the first pages were a little jarring because of their difference from what I think of as "typical Bryan Lee O'Malley," but as soon as I got into the bulk of the story, I was able to just enjoy it.

In terms of story, the book is about Katie, who is an even blend of Scott and Raleigh, both fairly clueless and introspective. I really liked reading her story, and while I don't feel as close to any of the characters in Seconds compared to the characters in SP, that can be chalked up to SP being a series and Seconds is only a single book. As I came closer to the end, I almost wished it could have been a longer series so the characters could really thrive.

I read an interview with O'Malley where he was asked whether Seconds is more like Scott Pilgrim or more like Lost at Sea, and he didn't have a good answer, and I can see why. Sorry to be vague, but it is like both, but also like neither. The modern, video-gamey feel of SP is gone, but the characterizations are similar. The deep, introspective elements of LAS are gone, but not entirely, and characters do a lot of ruminating about past mistakes, which is a key theme of the book.

As far as looks, the art is fantastic. Bryan has come a long way and it is noticeable. The characters are beautiful, the lines are defined and the art is stylized in a way that fits the tone of the story perfectly. It was especially nice to have it in color, which I enjoyed. Maybe black and white is your thing, but I really enjoyed the vibrant splashes of colors.

Overall - I loved every minute of this book, and if you are a fan of either of O'Malley's earlier books, you will most likely love this, and even if you are not, there is enough here to convert you. Pick this book up!
