Honoring the Giant Women of Faith

I read this book very many years ago and now purchase it as a gift for my daughters entering adulthood. I want them to know that the patriarchal lens on Scriptures and the hegemonic voice of much of institutionalized religion that diminishes the spiritual wisdom of women is only one perspective. The message of redemption is carried by and through women in the Scriptures of both the Old and New Testament. I suggest every parent buy this insightful book as a gift for their daughters and place it in the library of their church to seed a refreshing understanding of the prophetic voice of women in church and society.

compelling account of a man defying the odds!

Absolutely captivating. It is memorizing to be immersed in the story of a man who defies all odds to survive physically, mentally emotionally and spiritually through what must be one of the most enduring stories of survival in history. Witnessing the experience, the will, the mental fortitude, the skill and the transformation left me as a reader appreciating and sympathizing with Alveranga as he moves through this truly unique experience. I encourage any reader with a hint of curiousity about the story to read this book! It was intriguing to understand not only how he did it but how the experience changed him. Truly fascinating.

This is the story of Salvadore Alvarenga who survived 438 days at sea, in which he drifted 6,000 miles over the Pacific Ocean.
Overall I rated this book four and a half stars out of five. This was a truly amazing story, it is a one of a kind story. The kind you will only hear once in your lifetime. It is one of those stories that you have trouble believing that it's true. I really liked how this book included relevant information/facts and opinions coming from specialists, in that they backed up as well as enriched Salvadore Alvarenga's remarkable survival at sea. I am in awe of Salvadore, in his humility and his optimism, in how he never gave up. Just close your eyes for a moment, and imagine that you are stranded at sea. What would you do? How would you survive? To find out how Salvadore Alvarenga survived you must read this book for yourself

TOO MUCH WATER!!

The Cruel Sea......generally unforgiving...delivered this hungry little fella to a beach in the Marshall Islands.When you see the photos of his boat is when you should be quite surprised. This was good reading for me! Franklin kept it rolling along and managed to 'put you there'...which is the mark of a clever scrivener. It was fairly arduous in its entirety but no less compelling when you consider the suffering this man endured.Not to mention the abject fear when weighing up the possibilities he may be flailing around with the sharks who verily wanted to eat him. What a horrible thought to be tortured with daily for months. That the story had a dramatic component was not going to ensure its success in literature.That was going to depend on the ability of the author to deliver...and for me Franklin succeeded.

Beautiful with Humor

I will not lie I did a lot of crying while I read this book, but then again I laughed a lot too! It's so difficult to find a book that doesn't have the same story line as another. It was so refreshing to find a new approach. It was a beautiful story and unfortunately, a reality for many. I couldn't pass up reading this free offer, but the truth is I would have paid a much higher price now having read it. DO NOT MISS this one. It is INCREDIBLE! The author is truely talented, thank you Terry Dean!

As a Research Reference

Bassett tells the story of Shakespeare's life through the eyes of a fictional boyhood friend, Toby. Toby stays with Shakespeare throughout his whole life and outlives him. Toby is Bassett's device to be able to introduce some personalized elements into what otherwise would be a boring story for most kids. In reality not that much is known about Shakespeare! There are even a whole 14 years of his life that are "lost", where he falls from sight in the historical record.

Though the book is partly fictionalized it still provides good research material for a class unit about Elizabethan England. The backdrop of evolving political change is discussed (Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway, is represented as a Puritan, and Shakespeare's plays were presented to two monarchs of England), the many appearances of the Plague and short life spans in general, the danger of fire, the British love of theatrical entertainment, and the ability of a few to become star actors (and rich) are among the many themes touched upon. The book is accessible to readers with a 700 headword count, for example, classes/students whose vocabulary is not so advanced such as non-native English speakers or younger students.

Together with other sources, this book is useful in sparking interest in the era in which Shakespeare lived and wrote.

ASIDE: Bassett sticks mostly to the facts, but the facts are not many! She does not hint at the debate over the true authorship of Shakespeare's plays. To spark this debate, I can suggest including another book, _Shakespeare's Secret_ by Elise Broach, a contemporary fiction story about a stolen diamond that supposedly traces back several hundred years to Anne Boleyn, mother of Queen Elizabeth I. The protagonist is named after Hero, the beautiful young daughter of Leonato, in Shakespeare's _Much Ado About Nothing_. The name alone, "Hero" for a girl, causes whispers and a flurry of questions in a group of sixth graders!

Exactly the book I was looking for

I'm often disappointed by books in the "Dummies" series but this is exactly the elementary introduction to investing in bonds that I was looking for. I've followed the stock market and bought and sold individual stocks since I was child but I've never bought an individual bond. Financial advice books like Personal Finance After 50 For Dummies routinely mention that people should have a diversified portfolio of stocks and bonds but they never seem to explain how exactly one would go about buying a bond. I think the expectation is that you need to consult a financial advisor or a full-service broker but I am loathe to spend money on financial advice that I should be able to learn on my own.

This book explains why buying bonds online, although doable, is not as straightforward or inexpensive as buying common stock online simply because the bond market has not undergone the revolution in reduced fees that the stock market has seen (I remember the days before discount brokers to say nothing of online trading). Some key takeaways from this book include: you need about $350,000 to make buying individual bonds make sense, otherwise stick to bond funds or ETFs, and if you do buy individual bonds, don't expect to sell them before maturity because of the (mostly hidden) fees you will incur.

The author is mostly familiar with online bond-buying through Fidelity, which is fine with me personally but his tips may or may not apply to other brokers. I haven't yet decided if I should devote a significant portion of my portfolio to individual bonds but I now at least understand how to research the hidden fees and how I might go about building a "ladder" of diversified bonds.

Excellent book on understanding bonds and setting up a portfolio that includes them

This was one of the best overall books on investing I've read, and I've ready about 10 in the last month. While this book is mainly about Bonds, Russell spends quite a bit of time showing how bonds fit into a balanced portfolio and how to set up such a portfolio. As a newbe, that was very helpful to me He also removed a lot of the mystery of bonds, especially about buying and selling them, as well as why the price of bonds goes down when the interest rates go up, and vice versa. Especially important was understanding the effect of rising interest rates on short, medium, and long term bonds.

After reading this book, I decided to let the funds like Vanguard do the heavy lifting, since their expense ratio is very low and takes the hassle out of buying bonds. Russell also gives a lot of specific examples of the different types of funds available so that I would get a feel of what to expect from them.
