a dated but readable overview

This book falls somewhere between a science text and a popular science book, probably falling closer to the former. However it is a concisely written textbook that dwells at greatest length on the Pleistocene history of the lakes as it was understood in the early 1950s. Hough's work revises the literature from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century and presents some of the early carbon-14 dates for the moraines. It is important to keep in mind that all of these dates have been revised because it was discovered in the 1970s that C-14 is not produced at a constant rate in the upper atmosphere. Hough actually tries to relate the terrestrial record of moraines and lake sediments to the deep-sea record, which was pretty progressive for his time. However, the O-18 record of deep sea carbonate that serves as a proxy indication of global ice volume had not been published when Hough was writing.
So this text has to be read with caution. Many of the conclusions are probably out of date. However, Hough includes a lot background information about the bedrock geology and the limnology of the lakes that is quite useful and has probably not been as drastically revised as the Pleistocene sediment record. It is the chronology of the Pleistocene record that has been revised; Hough's relative sequence of events has probably only been changed in the details. He devotes a chapter to the history of each lake basin (although Huron and Erie are treated together) and admits that lake-to-lake correlation of events was still unclear.
A very useful feature of this text is the large number of nicely drawn figures and maps. The older maps and figures tend to be black & white and less full of fussy obscuring details, so they are very useful for teaching.

This book is the culmination of a research program conducted in Colombia during the past several years. The fundamental aim of the program was to develop neuropsychological tests for Spanish speakers, especially elderly individuals and those with limited edu� cational attainment. The lack of norms for these populations repre� sents a significant practical problem not only in developing countries but also in more developed countries. For example, norms are usually obtained with middle-class Anglo-Saxon English-speaking popula� tions, often university students, and such norms do not usually include individuals older than 65 years. Furthermore, very few neuro� psychological tests have been developed for Spanish speakers; fre� quently, tests are translated into Spanish (often poor translations at that), but the norms used are still those obtained from English� speaking populations. This volume summarizes the normative results of this research program. We anticipate that these tests and norms will be particularly useful in the neuropsychological evaluation of Spanish speakers, especially those with limited educational attainment, and the elderly. The United States represents the fifth largest Spanish-speaking coun� try in the world (after Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and Colombia), with over 20 million speakers. It is anticipated that by the year 2025 there will be as many Hispanics in the United States as members of all other ethnic minority groups combined. Further, about 10% of the U. S. population are considered functionally illiterate, with Hispanics rep� resenting an unusually large segment.

I will be reading the rest of the series

VERY enjoyable and interesting book - I felt entirely 'present' in Ceridwen's world with her, although slightly apart nonetheless. It is presented in first-person perspective of a young lady's experiences and her thoughts on them. Sometimes slow going or maybe one could say leisurely. This is not a bodice-ripper or a fast-paced page turning thriller but a immerision into a historical time period seen from the perspective of an ordinary - yet far from ordinary - character.

The relationship dynamics the eponymous young woman finds herself in made me question a bit more deeply some of my own biases and leanings - which I am still turning over in my thoughts. Sheds light a bit on certain things I've seen in real life - curious that, literature makes us think and reflect on life in general. I must say this book then qualifies as Literature.

It is very well written if at times paced at a pace somewhat less than griping page turning excitement. It was a longish read, and took me a longer time to complete than is my norm, but this book is beyond the usual norm and has much to recommend: Authentic period ambience, compelling characters, historical relevance, humanity reflected, and a young girl's heart followed through challenges beyond her years and expectations.

I did indeed enjoy too the educational value of learning about "the old gods" of the pre-Christian Anglo-Saxons and still trying to understand the Anglo-Saxon vs. Danish invaders history, probably because I know so very little of it academically ~ I suppose I could read history books instead of historical fiction but, nah, I like the fictional history. I won't be defending my own academic theories by what I read so absolute historical accuracy I can neither comment on nor get too worked up for either.

Definitely looking forward to Book #2 and #3. I will be reading the rest of the series.

Historical tale about Vikings, Saxons, love and adventure

The story is set in 9th century England during the war between the Saxon's and Vikings as seen through a courageous young lady's eyes. This book is the first in a trilogy and has a fairly simple story that lacks the usual twist/surprises and complicated plots that most authors seem to find as a must. I will admit that in the beginning I found it a bit boring but by the end I was surprised at how absorbed I had become. Much of this was due to the author's skill at character development and detailed writing. The first book can stand alone but I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy to find out what happens too many of the characters.

I've read this book years ago and was delighted to see it finally available on Amazon and picked it up to read again! From the beginning its very easy to immerse yourself into the world of Ceridwen and get caught up in the details and concerns of their time.

It is so researched and well thought out that the seamless storyline simply enfolds the reader. If you're curious about the time period, enjoy historical novels at all or long for an enduring love story that carries through the ages... this book is the start of a wonderful journey for you!

A great book for great results.

This is a great book and it serves both beginners and advanced users that want to implement System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2 (however if you have the 2012 version will serve you well too but without the new features).
I have read numerous books for SCCM from version 2007 and onwards, all of them were/are very good however they lacked something substantial, the real-world examples, some of them had/have fragments of them but neither has the extend of this book.
Kent has a very nice scenario based approach that guides you through and provides the directions on how to approach your SCCM implementation, his easy way of describing and writing style -without overdescribing and burdening you with too much info- helps you follow the book's flow and achieve your targets.
Although you can read it non-linearly it is best not to (except you have the previous editions and want to checkout the new stuff).
Highly recommended!
